about

“Felipe Perez plays old school Texas-Mexican Conjunto music like nobody else. He is renowned for playing fast and intricate accordion music with a traditional repertoire that has all but disappeared.”
- Dan Margolies, Tejano Conjunto Festival

Jalopy Records is proud to offer Dulce Sueños by legendary accordionist and Texas Conjunto Hall of Famer, Felipe Perez y Sus Polkeros.

The album will be issued as a deluxe CD with a 16 page color linernotes booklet by folklorist and producer Dan Margolies with information on Perez’s life and 70+ year career, including historic photos and album cover images. The album is also available via digital download.

Conjunto music is the sound of South Texas, and nobody plays it better or with more spirit than Felipe Perez. On this recording you are hearing Conjunto music played in a perfectly realized style.

Dulce Sueños features seven original songs and tunes by Perez as well as traditional and classic Conjunto songs and instrumentals in Felipe’s distinctive style and arrangements. The album begins with Perez’s new “Coronavirus Polka”.

This is música alegre played for dancing, drinking, and having a good time. The rhythms you hear at any Conjunto dance usually run the gamut from polkas to polkas to more polkas. But old school players like Felipe also play all the rhythms common in the borderlands for the past century and still revered by dancers there. The floor is never empty when Felipe plays.

"Like the boxer he once was, Felipe Perez (y Sus Polkeros) packs a knockout punch on his new album Dulce Sueños. The Tejano button accordion master `floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee’ across a well-paced set of 16 polkas, huapangos, redovas, and the lovely waltz that gives the album its title. He’s supported by a tight Conjunto trio (bajo sexto, bass and drums) that takes listeners to a south Texas cantina, home to hard-driving music for hard-working people. Several selections are Perez originals (among them Coronavirus Polka), a few come from his mentor Juan Lopez, and all bear witness to why Perez is in the Conjunto Hall of Fame and Santiago Jimenez, Jr. says: 'Felipe is a heavy player, man.'"
